This week we check in with a 6am and 4:30pm CrossFitter, Mary Merg! — Crossfitting since: May 2016. — A little about yourself: I grew up in Greendale, WI. I was the stereotypical tomboy growing up and played every sport under the sun. In high school, I had multiple athletic scholarships to play basketball, but I ended up turning them all down and went to UW-Whitewater to study History and play basketball. The ability for my family to follow my college basketball career was extremely important to me. After college, I ventured to the college coaching world making stops at Saint Mary's University (MN) and 2 years at Stanford University. Moving to California was the hardest decision I've ever made, but by far the best. It really forced me to get out of my comfort zone in a multitude of ways. At the end of the day though, I didn't want basketball to be my life. I moved back to good old Milwaukee and am currently a High School Counselor at Wauwatosa East High School. I love my job, working with adolescents in multiple realms. I am a huge advocate for mental health. I am also the Varsity Head Girls Basketball coach (Go Red Raiders!). Outside of work and coaching, I absolutely love traveling. My goal is to visit every National Park before the age of 40 (currently at 23). In addition, I take trips where the entire trip is focused on food and culture (huge foodie!). My last one was to NOLA and it is a must go if you haven't. Around Milwaukee you can catch me trying new restaurants and always saving room for Kopp's Custard - I am a tad obsessed with Kopp's. — How did you get into CrossFit? Shoutout to Kathleen Hagen! I really missed the team aspect of fitness that I got as a college athlete and Kathleen invited me to a class. I loved the challenge and I was hooked. — How has CrossFit changed you outside the gym? It has greatly impacted my overall physical and mental well-being. I did Olympic Lifts as a college athlete, but it's pretty cool beating my college PR's today. Also, in 2016 I trained for a marathon. At first, I was just running to train, but then started to do CrossFit. I could definitely tell a difference in endurance.
