I’m fed up!I am fed up with where the fitness and nutrition industry has taken you, the general public (and me!), in their health and fitness message. This time of year especially, the snake-oil salesmen and piranhas in our industry come out to feed on the gullible, well-intentioned, hard working folks looking to make positive changes for their New Year - all in the name of a dollar. I’m sad to say this, but I honestly believe I work in one of the most dishonest, unprofessional, and fraudulent industries in existence. Perhaps this is why we have a nation of the most gyms, health clubs, and easy access to healthy water and food in world history, and yet, we are still the fattest, confused, stressed and most unhealthy people in world history!?I don’t know what to do about it, other than to use my platform to inform you, the consumer and customer, to “Take your Health & Fitness Back."Over the next weeks, I will open up my ideas and thoughts to tell you the often unsexy, blatant truths in this industry. In turn, I hope that this saves you some headache, heartache, frustration, time and money along the way.To read part 1 - "Exercise is not Training" please go here!
Take Your Health & Fitness Back: Part 2 - Joining a gym is not the most effective way to lose weight!
Let's cut through the crap again in 2019, shall we? (If you haven't read my prior post, please see PART 1 here.)For the last 8 years this has been my gym. It’s one of my favorite places, and second home to some of my favorite people. I am very proud of my gym, what we do, and how we do it. Thousands and thousands of people have been through these doors over the years, and I'm humbled to say that. Life changes, marriages, friendships, body transformations, physical performance increases...I could go on.But listen to this; an estimated 23 million people in this country will join a gym and/or start an 'exercise program' this month (or have already). And by the end of this month (January), over half of those people will have already quit. Why?Because after laying down their credit card at the nearest gym promising them a 30-day total body transformation, 6-week trial, free week, 'X' amount of fat loss, and yet giving it their best effort, they find themselves burned out, not looking much different, and having lost much less fat then they expected or were promised. Here’s some cold hard truth most gym owners and many, many personal trainers would hate for you to know: exercise IS NOT the most effective or most efficient path to fat loss. At least not alone. Now do not misunderstand me here -- I wouldn’t own a fitness business if I didn’t know how important fitness is. Of course, if you don’t belong to a gym, or exercise regularly, you really should. I could go on for days about the benefits of exercise. But the actual science here is clear - among those benefits, fat loss isn’t even in the top 5.How do we know this?Because statistics. More people have gym memberships or follow a regular exercise routine than ever before. And yet our country is the most obese and unhealthy its ever been in world history. Every gym in the country, mine included, have members that have worked out for years without having lost any significant weight. You need Fitness, Nutrition and Accountability (Community). You also need realistic expectations through education (this is why I am doing this series). There are only two ways real fat/weight loss occurs; one is by having part of your body surgically removed. And the other...yep, is diet. How much you eat and what you eat has more say on what you look like and how you feel than exercise does. Exercise amplifies the progress you're already making with the diet.If you want to see a change in the way you feel and the way you look, then let's have a chat, in person, and cut through the crap the industry doesn't want you to know - that fat loss is done with food, not exercise.CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE
