What I consider “feats of strength” has evolved over the years. There was a time when I measured strength by the pounds on a barbell or the time on a clock. Today, I’m most proud of being able to carry my two toddlers for long stretches, let them pretend they’re airplanes, give piggyback rides, and stay fully engaged in their world.

I grew up in Ohio, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from University of Mount Union. Athletics have always been a central part of my life. I primarily played basketball growing up, along with baseball, soccer, and football in my childhood prior to high school. Over time, I’ve come to see exercise and fitness as more than physical training. While the physical benefits are undeniable, the impact on mental health is just as powerful, if not more so. Movement has always been a foundation for both my physical and emotional well-being.

I can’t point to a single turning point. I’ve always valued taking care of myself physically and mentally. What has changed is my “why.” It’s no longer about chasing numbers or times rather it’s about staying strong, capable, and present for my family and the life I want to live.

I believe deeply in carving out one hour a day that is solely yours. In my work as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I often tell patients that few things improve emotional well-being more than consistently taking that hour for yourself. For me, that hour usually involves a heart rate pushing 190 and a few choice words, but it’s my reset. It’s my foundation. And it’s one of the most important investments I make in myself every day.
