March's Featured Male Athlete: Jeff Schmidt

Name: Jeff SchmidtHometown: MadisonAge: 31CrossFitting since: May 2012Favorite WOD or movement: Pullups, push press, and ring dipsLeast favorite WOD or movement: Burpees, toes-to-bar, and snatchWhat is your fitness background? What were you doing before CrossFit? Mainly running and weight lifting, no high school or college sports. I did a full marathon in 2010 and try to do a couple of halfs every year. I also am a member at Waukesha MMA where I had been attending their cardio conditioning classes 2-3 times per week prior to joining BCF (and still try to make it there once every couple of weeks because the people are great). How did you get into CrossFit? I first heard of CrossFit in 2008 but became very interested after seeing some of the 2011 CrossFit Games this past winter. Not long after I realized Dan Wilde had joined the gym so I had a chance to pick his brain about it and hear all the positive things he had to say before signing up for the Elements class. How have you changed since starting Badger CrossFit? I think the biggest impact for me has been a change in diet. I love that diet/nutrition/sleep is something people discuss so frequently at the gym, in the facebook group, etc because it seems like that element is overlooked or even ignored in traditional gyms. I dropped 5 pounds during the four weeks of Elements class alone and have noticed little things improving like being able to hold a handstand for 10-15 seconds, or finally being able to put a few double unders together during the warmup. What are your goals for 2013? Where are you in terms of achieving them? I'd like to finally get rid of my fat roll :) And perhaps finish a half marathon this fall at a sub-8:30 pace. Also never tried a muscle-up but would like to complete a few of those. What makes Badger CrossFit unique? Not having ever been to another CrossFit gym I don't have a great perspective on this but what I have noticed is that I've meet a lot of very cool people in the last four weeks and instruction from Tyler and the other coaches has been excellent.Any best BCF stories? None yetWhat advice do you have for people just getting started? Based on my limited experience, I'd tell someone I new who was just starting out about the dramatic differences in just a handful of weeks I've been seeing. Makes me excited for 6 months from now. (Jeff submitted this last June, so things have changed I'm sure!)
